Our Work in Nigeria
Our work starts in Akabor community, Oguta LGA, Imo State, and extends to nearby communities only where schools and families invite us in. Here is what we have done and what we are planning.
Education
Children in rural communities often drop out for reasons that are specific and fixable — an exam fee a family cannot pay, a classroom without enough seats. We find those gaps with the school and close them quickly.
OUR GOALS
- ✓Registered 40 at-risk students at Ejemekwuru Akabor Secondary School for the 2026 WAEC examination
- ✓Donated chairs and desks to ease a classroom seating shortage
- ✓Keep working with the school administration and St. Anthony Catholic Church to identify students at risk of dropping out
Health & Wellbeing
Planned for April–September 2027, subject to funding: a six-month health education programme for adolescent girls in Akabor and nearby communities, covering puberty, menstruation, staying safe and healthy relationships.
OUR GOALS
- ✓Reach 500 girls aged 12–19 through school-based workshops
- ✓Train 20 girls as peer educators who continue the work after the programme
- ✓Distribute 300 menstrual hygiene kits and 500 educational brochures
- ✓Link schools to at least two youth-friendly health service points
- ✓Achieve at least a 40% gain in knowledge scores between pre- and post-tests
Child Protection
Safeguarding is built into every project that involves children. We work only where schools, parents and the children themselves have agreed, and our volunteers know the limits of their role.
OUR GOALS
- ✓Written school permission, parental consent and the child's own assent before any session
- ✓A female facilitator or staff member present in every girls-only session
- ✓No one-to-one closed-door meetings between an adult volunteer and a child
- ✓Disclosures referred the same day through the school and agreed health services
Community Development
We enter communities through the people who already hold trust — traditional leaders, parish leadership, school principals and mothers' groups — so that projects are wanted, understood and sustained locally.
OUR GOALS
- ✓Brief community gatekeepers before any project begins
- ✓Agree needs and examples with a local panel before materials are used
- ✓Report results back to the community, not only to donors
